Finishing Touches

star decoration The Table star decoration
A base was made from a plastic pretzel jar with the rim cut off. We then hot-glued fabric over it, glued a ring of cardboard covered in ribbon outside to the center for a stand, and placed a metallic ball we found in the lab onto the stand to serve as the crystal ball.

Two pieces of cardboard were glued onto either end of a large wad of cotton balls. More cotton balls and larger, fuzzy craft balls taken from PicoCricket kits formed the neck and chest. This base was covered in hot glue and we stretched cotton over everything to create the illusion of downy feathers. Her beak is construction paper and her eyes are two plastic grapes taken from an artificial bunch in the craft bins. We also found the craft hair and the sparkly material for her head scarf in the craft bins.

star decoration The Eggs star decoration
The golden eggs were plastic easter eggs covered in a single coat of spray paint. Taking a large piece of butcher paper and attaching the opened eggs to the paper with masking tape made the process much easier. The eggs were easier to move and didn't budge from the wind outside or the force of the spray paint.

star decoration Clothing star decoration
Lucy is dressed head to claw in purple satin. We made her sleeves wide and loose to give her wings room to move. We kept the back open, in case the robot would need any last-minute adjustments or fixes. We fastened the fabric to the torso with a needle and thread: we sewed together the sleeves and sewed the top of the skirt through the holes in the lego pieces on the back of the torso. A last-minute flourish was sewing on small, lightweight coins to the edges of her sleeves. We also brought in an old silver-colored chain to wrap a few times around Lucy's neck. Two copper-colored metal rings found from one of the bins in the lab served as hoop earrings, which we hot-glued directly to the head.
